The 2002 DC Comics comic book series Y: The Last Man was adapted and approved for a live action series on FX. The comic book is set in a post apocalyptic era in which there is one man left on earth: Y aka Yorick Brown.
With 60 comic issues, the award winning series holds a magnifying glass to gender, class, and race issues. Like many other apocalyptic tales, in Y , a mysterious plague/virus successfully commits genocide. In this particular case, any carrier of the "Y" chromosome perished. The "last man" alive, Yorick Brown, and his trusty monkey companion "Ampersand" set off to find answers. The antagonists, a female Republican saturated government chase after Y , hindering his search.
The screen adaptation was written by Michael Green, who is currently working on the tv series American Gods. Aida Mashaka Croal ("Luke Cage") will step in as co-showrunner. Melina Matsuka will direct and executive produce ,while Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Brian K. Vaughan.
According to Variety the show has been in the works for a while, but New Line Cinema still had the rights to the title. New Line Cinema acquired the rights a few years ago for a film adaptation that never saw the light of day. There was a fan film released in 2012 that was unaffiliated with DC Comics or any other production company that is available on "IGN's" Youtube.
There is no particular release date for the FX "Y" pilot at this time.
