Historical bio film Woman Walks Ahead is coming out in theaters June 29th. The film includes Jessica Chastain, Sam Rockwell, Ciaran Hinds, and David Midthunder. The plot of the movie follows the character Catherine Weldon who is a portrait painter from 1890s Brooklyn, New York who travels to the Dakota territory to paint a portrait of Sitting Bull. While there she becomes entangled with the Lakota peoples struggle to keep the right to their lands.
Wheldon eventually sides with the Natives of the Standing Rock tribe and begins to work with Chief Sitting Bull by helping him write letters to the federal government on his behalf. She ends up living there for several years with her own son. This film plot, of course, is based on a true story of the real Wheldon and Chief Sitting Bull. This story also has several books about it as well. This movie will be interesting to watch since the Standing Rock Sioux tribe is still facing prejudice and problems as the federal government takes over their sacred land with oil pipelines such as the Dakota Access Pipeline.
