Who here has heard of the name Steven Spielberg or George Lucas? Most of you know exactly who I’m talking about or at least you might know their films like E.T., Star Wars, the Jurassic Park trilogy and their combined work on Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Land Before Time. Maybe you’ve even heard their names on an episode of the Big Bang Theory. Even if you’re not sure their names ring a bell, right? Well, what about the name Kathleen Kennedy? I’m guessing unless you’re an absolute die-hard nerd/geek with a lot of films know how most of you have no clue who I’m talking about and that’s what this blog post will focus on.
Kennedy has produced around 77 films throughout her 44-year career. Most of those films she was alongside Spielberg and Lucas every step of the way. She helped to produce E.T., the Jurassic Park trilogy, The Land Before Time and was an assistant to Spielberg for Raiders of the Lost Ark and producer to the other Indiana Jones films. This woman has been with these two for most of their major motion pictures that have become academy acclaimed. In fact, Kennedy is now the president of Lucasfilm and has been producing the new Star Wars series including Rouge One and the new Han Solo film. She’s also produced The Sixth Sense, Girl on the Train, and more.
Despite all her success and being the most high-volume female producer in Hollywood she still can’t seem to get out of the shadows of her two male companions who helped to get her career started in the first place. Kennedy is 62 years young, but Hollywood would say a woman at this age is going downhill and won’t be able to stay in the industry. But thanks to Lucas and Spielberg she’s gone from sectary to studio president, however, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had to work hard to get there. In fact, after Lucas brought Kennedy to the company he sold the studio to Disney. It was Kennedy who worked on the reboot of the series and brought the studio and franchise out of its ten years of sitting on the shelf.
Because of this Kennedy has managed to shine some light passed Lucas’s and Spielberg’s shadow. However, if we’re talking money she’s still left completely in the dark. Kennedy’s net worth is only 1.5 million. I know to the average person that’s a huge net worth but compared to Spielberg’s 3.6 billion and Lucas’s 5 billion it falls short. True she’s only just recently become the president of the studio, but one could only imagine how much more her net worth would be if she were male. During Women’s history month, that will be ending soon, it’s important to acknowledge that we still have a long way to go with gender equality, especially when it comes to equal pay and recognition in the work force. That’s what the blog post’s aim was, to help shed some light on Kathleen Kennedy and her success for those of you who didn’t know and to celebrate a successful woman during Women’s history month.
