Last night on NBC was the U.S. Figure Skating Championship. Girls from all ages across the country competed for first place. Many girls who skated were very young and were trying to get more recognition to help their future skating careers and their chances to join the Olympic team. One of these young girls was Alysa Liu who actually won first place last night at only 13 years old. She’s the youngest skater ever to win this Championship and she scored 217.51 points.
Liu was going against top skaters such as Bradie Tennell who earned second and Mariah Bell who earned third. Tennell was expected to win the show, however after she, unfortunately, fell during her routine her score went down. The same thing also happened to Bell as well and after her routine, she did her best to laugh it off; which just showed her great spirit and sportsmanship. In an interview beforehand Liu stated that she was set on going to the championship to win and she did just that. Lui landed eight triples and two axels with complete ease.
Liu has raised the bar for future figure skating routines for sure. Many predict that Liu’s performance will inspire and challenge the next generation of skaters. During her interview, Liu was completely aw struck and admitted that her win hadn’t full sunk it yet as she stood there in shock. Everyone in the figure skating world including 1998 Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski agree that this is a name to look out for. After watching her perform last night it wouldn’t surprise me if this girl will be at the next winter Olympic games.
