Actor Gerard Butler will be in a new film called The Vanishing that will be out in theaters this Friday. This film is inspired by the true story of the Flannan Isle mystery. The movie plot is about three lighthouse keepers on the island of Flannan who discover a hidden trunk of gold. Finding this trunk appears to be bad news as a ship approaches the lighthouse. James, Thomas, and Donald are curious as to where the gold is from, who it belongs to, and who is on the ship.
Sadly the men have been isolated for too long and greed and paranoia begin to sink in as each of them fight for survival. Now, there was no trunk of gold in the actual mystery, but three lighthouse keepers did vanish. A small relief boat had gone to the island to replace the three keepers after working alone in the lighthouse for 6 weeks. When the new keepers reach the dock they notice no one comes out to greet them, the winch is broken, there’s no answer to their calls, nothing. All three of the keepers Thomas, James, and Donald were well-experienced keepers so it didn’t make much sense that they would disappear.
What was even more strange was the fact that the lamps were all clean and refilled and their dinner was laid out on the table. The only things that were out of place were an overturned chair and two sets of yellow oilskins that were gone as well. These men were never found, and the mystery remains unsolved to this day. There have been a few theories here and there. One is that there was a deadly storm that was approaching and that the men could have been killed in the surge or something, however, it’s just a rocky theory.
