After seeing this video done by Disney Style on Facebook the other day, I wanted to share with you all the story of the designer known as Nephi Garcia, aka Designer Daddy. Garcia grew up in the Philippines and got into fashion and sewing from watching his grandma, but his parents didn’t really support this passion. It was his sister that used her allowance for him to continue his work in secret. One of his main inspirations is Disney and the Disney Princess.
One of the first Disney film’s he saw on VHS was Beauty and the Beast and the scene that spoke to him the most was when Belle ran into the open field behind her home singing about wanting adventure in the world someone. Garcia wanted to experience this too. It wasn’t until he met his wife that he began to have more confidence in his dream. Sadly though, he did hit a rough patch in his life where he, his wife, and two kids were living in a motel and his parents wishing he’d pursue a different career. It was his wife that told them he should keep on going.
He ended up wanting to design a princess dress for his daughter and was going to do Belle’s blue dress when his wife suggested he try a transformation dress. Garcia made Belle’s blue dress that could transform into the ball gown she wore to dance with the Beast. After people asked about his dresses and if he had social media he began to upload more content under the name, Designer Daddy. Soon people were going crazy for his designs and making requests for him to design wedding gowns, cosplay dresses, and dresses for their kids.
Both Garcia and his wife have a specific Disney princess that they both relate to and admire. Garcia’s wife loves Cinderella because she always held onto hope even when there wasn’t too much to hope for. Garcia relates to Rapunzel because like Rapunzel he too had to find ways to be creative in a limited space. Garcia loves Disney because it inspired him and now inspires his kids to be creative and zealous in any dream they have. The video ended with him designing a breathtaking Cinderella gown for his wife. That’s all for this blog post. ‘til next time.
