Oprah Winfrey and Stephen Spielberg are teaming up to create a musical version of the novel The Color Purple. The book was written by Alice Walker in 1982 and later turned into a film in December of 1985. In fact, Spielberg was the one who directed the first film. The book became a Broadway musical back in 2005 and closed in 2008. Also, Winfrey was apart of the 1985 cast and she played Sofia, but it’s not known at this time whether or not she’ll have a role in this film or not.
Furthermore, this musical will be a lot different than the film Spielberg created in 1985. The original producer of the film Quincy Jones will also return to help with this new adaption. The film isn’t expected to come out in theaters until the year 2020. So for now, the group is just working on the songs and who could possibly play in in the film. Hopefully, the film is successful, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it is successful because this isn’t the first Broadway play to be turned into a box office hit.
