Sorry to Bother You, directed by, Boots Riley, is set to be released to for viewing pleasure of the general public this summer, July 6th, 2018; the trailer has been released by AnnaPurna Pictures.
The film’s lead character, Cassius Green, portrayed by Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out), is a regular guy out of an alternate present-day Oakland, who takes a job as a telemarketer. He finds a way to transcend into success and an alternate universe. There is, however, imagery of police in riot gear, and monotonous tasks, which can suggest social and societal commentary.
At first glance, there is no way to truly know what to expect, out of the film. As Boots Riley, has said to multiple platforms, including LA Times, “…it is an absurdist dark comedy, with magical realism and science fiction, inspired by the world of telemarketing.”

The film stars a few of my favorite actors, Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnorok & Black Mirror) as Detroit, Terry Cruz as Sergio Green, and Armie Hammer (Call me By Your Name), as Steve Lift. The list goes on, but for time sake, I believe the film was cast well. One thing that is admirable about the film as that the “white voice” of the telemarketers is voiced over by Caucasian actors, one being David Cross (The Post) and Patton Oswalt.
The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year, and knocked the socks off of viewers then. After watching the trailer I am confident that this is guaranteed to wow anyone watching.
“Let me give you a tip: You want to make some money here? You gotta use your white voice” – Langston (Danny Glover) Sorry to Bother You
The movie is meant to explore and take a look into the lives of people in jobs “we take for granted”, versus more “glamourous films”. Sorry to Bother You is indeed, a dark satire with Get Out vibes. Take a look at the trailer:
