In an era of constant film adaptations of books, television shows, comics, vintage remakes/reboots, prequels/sequels/ spin-offs of old films/shows, and video games, yet another video game to film adaptation is on the horizon: Sonic the Hedgehog. In this film, Sonic teams up with his friends to stop the evil Dr. Eggman. The film will have the voice talents of Tika Sumpter, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey who will voice Eggman. Sonic the Hedgehog is expected to be released in theaters in November 2019.
Sonic was originally created as a SEGA game console character by Naoto Oshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara. It was their intention to come up with a character that could compete with Nintendo’s popular video game character, Mario. It was their hope that Sonic, much like Mario, would become the Sega mascot and have Nintendo users want to switch over and buy the Sega Genesis console.
The first game came out in 1991 and won the holiday sales war against the brand new Super NES system and Sega’s two-year-old Genesis. The whole concept of the character was based off a 1940s pilot who loved to fly so fast that his hair would stick up like a hedgehog. The plot of the game was inspired by the 1990s environmental movement so, they had the theme of nature vs environmental development. The villain, of course, is Eggman or Dr. Robotnik who wishes to rule Planet Mobius. To date, Sonic has become one of the most popular characters in the video game world with merchandise and pop culture, including has had two television series, and a 1996 cartoon movie.
