Musical artist, director, writer, comedian, and actor, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino released "This is America". The video is filled with provocative imagery, to include senseless use of firearms and dance fads that can consume society. It truly shines a light on every day life: mundane, oversensitive, desensitization, of America. One moment, social media, and news outlets are littered with negative, unsettling chaos, yet the public is some how able to return to normal in seconds, capable of still "enjoying" the American promise of "freedom".
The video, accompanied, by Gambino's new song, "This is America", opens with a man preparing to play acoustic guitar. Behind him, is Glover with his back facing the camera, sporting a bare chest and a full face of hair. He dances to the man, to casually shoot him in the back of the head. "This is America", though a bit darker and more straight forward in theme, seems to resemble the same idea on Todrick Hall's "Ordinary Day", minus the heavy discussion on choice of sexuality. Gambino's video turned especially dark after a church choir is massacred. Donald Glover has showed us, again, his lyrical and visual genius is a force to be reckoned with.
According to Genius, Gambino had postponed releasing music and was not expected to have anything out until 2019, but that fact may have changed. Just recently, Gambino also hosted and performed on SNL. He performed his song about the woes of working class people titled, "Saturday". Other than his hosting, Gambino, has also been busy with his show, Atlanta. "This is America" is his first song since his grammy nominated album, "Awaken, My Love!" Watch "This is America" here.
