Ralph Breaks the Internet, or more commonly known as Wreck- it Ralph 2, or the Wreak it Ralph sequel, hits me in the center of "ooh that looks nice," and then "Um okay but why?" Now don't get me wrong. I loved Wreck it Ralph. I was very beautifully done. The world building, the characters and their motivations as well as the character building and depth. That twist at the end about Turbo infiltrating a game and being the villain that was hinted instead of bashing it over the viewers head. Finally that ending, beautiful. It was very good. It went full circle with a nice warm center. The movie ends with Ralph at his villains anonymous therapy meeting talking about the best part of his day is when he gets thrown off the roof because when he is lifted up he gets the perfect view of Sugar Rush, and how much he has helped Vanellope and that he's a good person because he's made a friend. Game over, movie finished and tears shed.
So, the question is who is asking for this movie? Like who is coming home after a long day, placing their keys on the hook to their house, greeting their pet, lets say a bearded dragon named Rasputin, and then reclining on their bed looking at the ceiling with the burning question, I wonder how Ralph and Vanellope are doing? Who is asking that? Other than of course this person that I fabricated, or some person who happens to have friends or nieces or nephews named Ralph and Vanellope?
The movie ended perfectly, in the way of answering questions that were not rushed or half- baked. Ralph talked about his life and how people were nicer and better to him and how it has improved his life. How he's helped other people. It tied up loose ends. Felix gets married, Ralph was the best man. Characters from games that have been shut down get to help in the bonus level and get a place to stay. Vanellope's fears about not being a good racer or if players would like the game Sugar Rush are resolved, and Ralph sees that with a level of pride. So Why have a new movie about them encountering the internet?
I mean I really enjoyed Wreck it Ralph and most movies that get a sequel aren't always awful but there is like a worry about the legacy that it already has. The movie ended fine. It was funny and enjoyable. The ending left me warm and a little tearful about this guy finding happiness. I just don't want it to be a train-wreck or a lets's take some of your favorite characters and place them in a zany plot.
I'm interested in what can happen with Ralph Breaks the internet but, I still hold my reservations.
