Ever since December 8, I've had the movie I, Tonya at the top of my "must see" list. After the opening week, I decided to just wait until the movie was in Redbox that way I could save a little bit of money. This docu-drama follows the events that lead up to the attack of Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. The movie also had a few good bits of comedy which made the story line more interesting. Before the attack, the story shows the hard family life Harding grew up in and the abuse she eventually went through with her husband at the time Jeff Gillooly.
One of the main reasons that I wanted to see the movie was because Margot Robbie was cast to play the lead role of Tonya. The 27 year-old Australian actress has built quite the resume with her film roles and has been active in the industry for 10 years. I've been a fan of hers since her role as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf Of Wall Street. From 2008 up until know she's kept her most of her focus on her acting skills but apparently had an interest in producing. I, Tonya was one of the first films that Robbie has producer credits on and I don't think it'll be the last for her.
Overall, the production of the movie was great and the selection of the cast was even better. For some reason the movie just lacks a little bit of "pizzazz" but I'm not sure exactly what it is. But that's just my opinion, the movie currently is sitting on a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is typically hard to get. The movie also made well over it's budget of $11 million by hitting almost $35 million over. Although I feel like the film may have missed a few emotional buttons for me, others believe it was the the $10-$15 they paid in theaters, I definitely preferred paying $5 for a Redbox rental. ;)
