In 2015, Director Matthew Vaughn brought us the light-hearted action pack film Kingsman: The Secret Service. Taron Egerton (Eggsy), Colin Firth (Harry Hart), and Samuel L. Jackson (Valentine) all had amazing performances in the first film. After dropping out of training for the Marines, Eggsy becomes a candidate to join a private intelligence service called Kingsman. Eventually all the competition is knocked out and only Eggsy and Roxy (Sophie Cookson) are left. At the last challenge, Eggsy is unable to complete it and Roxy is the one chosen as the new agent. For those who may not have seen the first film, I don’t want to give too many spoilers. :)
Last fall, Vaughn blessed us again with a new film within the series, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The story line is similar but instead of the menacing Valentine, we are given Poppy (Julianne Moore). After Poppy bombs the Kingsman headquarters and wipes out all agents except Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong), they follow emergency protocol and land themselves in Kentucky. They locate an American private intelligence service where they began working with agents Tequila (Channing Tatum) and Ginger Ale (Halle Berry).
Although this movie had some great performers, I have to say this is a case where the sequel is not better than the original. I appreciate the amount of action that was provided in the film, especially the final fight scene between Eggsy and Whiskey (Pedro Pascal), but the first film was higher on my list based on story development. But who am I to say which one had story development? I just thank Matthew Vaughn for both these gems and hope a third one may be in our future.
