Rising star Daniel Kaluuya has been making big moves since last year in the film industry. Although he has been in the game since 2006, most of his beginning work was in London. The 30-year-old London actor has been creating quite a buzz for himself and I believe his success will only continue to grow. After starring in many English television shows and films, he got gained his American audience when he appeared in the Netflix series Black Mirror. The series was first released in the United Kingdom in 2011 but didn't premier on Netflix until 2016. He appeared in the second episode of the first season entitled "Fifteen Million Merits."
After his role in Black Mirror, he received a lot of positive reviews from the critics and gained much popularity. He did so well that he caught the attention of actor, screenwriter, and producer Jordan Peele who ended up casting him in his 2017 original film Get Out. Before landing the role in Get Out, he was cast in the 2013 film sequel Kick-Ass 2. Although the sequel didn't do as well as the first with the critics, it was still a box office success. During it's opening weekend the film bought in $13.3 million and opened in fifth place. The film started with a $28 million budget and went well over that bringing in $60.7 million in total. Although it wasn't as big as the roles to come, it still gave him a few more fans.
Kaluuya got his breakout role in 2017 as Chris Washington in the Jordan Peele film Get Out. The original horror film created buzz before it was released and had many people anticipating the premier. Beginning with a budget of $4.5 million the film made over that within the first day earning $10.8 million in box offices sales. The films gross continued to grow for over three-weeks and earned $255 million in total box office sales. The film gained much success and got Kaluuya 10 awards and many nominations for his performance. The film as a whole sits on a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an average rating of 8.3 out of 10. Kaluuya continued to rise with his success and landed another large breakout role in this year.
At the top of the year Kaluuya was cast in one of the highest-grossing solo superhero films, Black Panther. The film was highly publicized and did well in pre-ticket sales before the film was even released. The film started off with an estimated $210 million budget and earned well over that bringing in $1.300 billion in total. So far the film has received great reviews and has earned a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was a large success and it will be interesting to see how many awards the film alone gets nominated for and also how many Kaluuya will get nominated for with his performance. He is scheduled to star in another film later this year that will be a heist thriller. It will be exciting to see how well he does with this role and it will also be great to see him in some horror films later this year or in his career.
