King Kong has ruled as a monster on the silver screen for years and now he’s headed to Broadway for the very first time. That’s right the giant monstrous gorilla that fights insane monsters and dinosaurs throughout his many films will now have his on musical written by Marius de Vries, lyrics by Michael Mitnick and Craig Lucas. Some of you are probably wondering how that massive gorilla could appear on stage. Well much like the original film there will be a mix of puppetry and animatronics to help bring Kong to life. The plot of the play is much like the original 1933 film.
However, this time actress Ann Darrow will be the main focus of the first moments of the play. Despite living in New York during the Great Depression Darrow has dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. Her dream comes true when filmmaker Carl Denham asks her to be the female lead in his new action/adventure film. Denham and Darrow set out on a voyage to a mysterious filming location known as Skull Island. While on the island they discover Kong the ape.
Denham immediately wants to capture Kong and take him back to New York to make some serious profit. Darrow, on the other hand, is struggling with either going along with Denham’s plan. After being taken by Kong Darrow understands the animal a bit more and believes Kong should be left alone. Will Darrow keep Kong safe or chose to use him for profit like Darrow? The play’s times and tickets are available on several websites.
