John Legend (All of Me singer) and Sara Bareilles ("Brave" singer) starred as Jesus and Mary Magdalene in "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert," April 1st, Easter Sunday. The concert is an adaptation of the award-winning "rock opera" film, which is based on the events in the last week of Jesus Christ's life, before the resurrection. It is told from the perspective of Judas (Ben Daniels), who according to the holy bible, betrayed Jesus.
It began with a moving guitar solo, followed by a build up of violins and a full brass band. The stage is large, yet simple. There was a structure that looked a bit misplaced in the beginning. It resembled the table that should have been set up for the last supper. The entire opening scene was just an elaborate way to break down the structure. When it came time for the actual last supper, they laid a blanket down like some families sit children on the kitchen floor on top of a sheet to eat Popsicles.
During the scene where Peter denies Jesus "thrice" , there were people taking photos and video of Peter, which obviously doesn't match the time period, but I appreciated the modern twist. There were a few moments where John Legends acting seemed a bit forced, but his powerful voice overshadowed that. In most scenes however, he embodied Jesus’ vibes in visible humility. Sara Bareilles (Mary Magdalene) Her singing was heart felt and comforting. She portrayed Mary Magdalene with style and grace. Those being my only real grievances, overall, the live performance helped me to reflect on the resurrection of Jesus, just in time for Easter. The show was entertaining and visually pleasing.
