Hey Femm readers. I’m here to share with you guys a film promo for the movie, The Miracle Season. This film is coming out in theaters this month and not only is it inspired by a true story but it’s also a story of a female team overcoming a tragedy that befell their school and community. This film will be focusing on the story of the girl’s West High Volleyball team that lost their team captain Caroline to a moped accident. The death of their captain left both the team and the town broken and at a loss. That is until their coach inspires them to become a better team and better young women by winning all their games for Caroline.
Despite this movie there haven’t been too many like it. There have been plenty of sports films based off of or inspired by true stories and events. Most of them are the football films like Remember the Titans, We Are Marshall, and When the Game Stands Tall. These films show male teammates and their communities overcoming tragic events, racism, or the end of an era. They make audiences feel how important sports can be for not only the athletes and coaches but the community as well. Sports are a part of the American spirit but out of all these films where are the girl team stories?
There have been plenty of tragic events that our female athletes have endured such as the crash of Sabena Flight in 1961 that killed the U.S. figure skating team, Iowa State’s cross-country team whose flight crashed as well, North Central Texas College softball team lost four players in a bus crash, and many more. But how many of these tragedies have we seen become inspiring sports films? In fact, the most female inspirational films I’ve seen have been TV movies like on Disney Channel and Lifetime. And as far as big screen movies go there is Million Dollar Baby, Whip It, Bend it Like Beckham, and a few others.
Out of all these though, the ones based off or inspired by true stories/events have been the films Battle of the Sexes, A League of Their Own, Gracie, Girlfight, and Soul Surfer. And shocker that a sizable number of female sports films have been romantic chick flicks that focus on the girl athlete falling for a male athlete. Not to mention the over dramatic and not realistic cheerleader and gymnastic films. Well except the Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles TV movies that is. Also, I’ll leave a link down below to some articles on the previously mentioned disasters as well. That’s all for this blog post. ‘til next time.
