In just a few weeks Radio City Music Hall will be filled with stars waiting to see which nominee will take home a Tony Award. The Tony Awards recognizes the achievements of those in the Broadway industry. On June 10, the 72nd Tony Awards show will be broadcast live on CBS. This year's host of the award ceremony will be singers Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles. Although they may seem like odd choices, they both have Broadway success tucked in their back pockets.
Not only does this year's Tony Awards have an interesting choice of host, many of the nominees are as well. Let's take a look a some of the productions and actors who have been nominated for a Tony Award this year.
Three Broadway shows have stood out on the nominees list are the "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Mean Girls", and "Frozen". SpongeBob SquarePants being turned in a Broadway show was honestly bound to happen because their was really nothing else to be done by SpongeBob. The musical is follows the human version of SpongeBob played by Ethan Slater. The show is a great spin to the show we've all come to love and to see SpongeBob and the rest of the characters in human form is definitely something.
Tina Fey decided that it was time to fill our Mean Girls need and bring the story to Broadway. The story line pretty much follows the film as Cady Heron (Erika Henningsen) and her friends live life in high school against the plastics. The critics have given the film pretty good reviews. Frozen had recent success in theaters and has been brought to the Broadway scene. It will be interesting to see how takes home the win in the many categories that they're all competing in.
They're are a few stars up for some big awards as well such as Best Leading Actor/ Actress in A Play/ Musical. Actor Denzel Washington has been nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Play and Michael Cera is nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play. Amy Schumer has also been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play and LaChanze has been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. You never know who may take home a Tony, tune in June 10th to see who does.
