Google has just developed a new assistant, Google Duplex, that has an amazing feature on it that can make appointment calls for you. It takes your voice and can call a doctor’s office, restaurant, hair salon, plumber, and other places and can set up a time for you. All you have to do is say, “Hey Google make an appointment on Monday from 12 to 2 and the A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) system will call the place and speak to an employee to see wah time slot they have open. It can even call a restaurant for you and can get a table reserved for you and your party.
Google had a demo video that gives examples of how the device works. In the video, there’s a moment where they call a local Asian restaurant where the employee is heard having an accent. The A.I. system took it’s time to understand her and to communicate with her, so she could know the date and time for the person calling. The system was designed to understand the distinctions of human conversations, words, phrases, and dialect. It took Google many years to come up with the technology of converting text to clearly spoken words.
The assistant can also send you a notification to remind you of your appointment. It can even ask for wait times while setting up reservations as well. I know that Introverts, people with Social Anxiety, and others who absolutely can’t stand making these types of phones calls will love this device. However, one does have to ask if the video presentation was edited or fudged in any way. I mean there’s reason for skepticism if you’ve dealt with Siri, Alexa, Cortona, and other AIs that flat out don’t understand what you’ve just said even though you have said it carefully. It could also be a while before the system comes out to users; especially if Google has any more tests to run.
