Hey Femms, I hope you had a nice day today, I wanted to share with you guys the upcoming remake of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This film will be done by Illumination, the same animation company that brought you the Despicable Me series, Minions, and Sing. It’ll be cool to see what Illumination will do with this classic children’s story. The remake has been titled The Grinch and filming is expected in November of 2018. The plot of the Grinch ruining Christmas is in this remake, but the reasons why might be different than the book and the live-action Jim Carry film. This new Grinch will be voiced by the charming Benedict Cumberbatch who has awesome vocal talents.
Grinch was published in the year 1957. Seuss wrote the book to criticize the over-commercialization of Christmas much like the Charlie Brown Christmas special and Miracle on 34th St. The book has been on the Teacher’s Top 100 books for Children list. The book is written in Seuss’s famous rhymed verse. The Grinch is a solitary creature that lives on top of Mount Crumpet and for some unknown reason he hates the people of Who-ville and Christmas. In the book and cartoon movie that came out 1966, Seuss only said it could be that his head wasn’t screwed on right, or he shoes were too tight, or that his heart was two sizes too small. But again, we don’t know why his heart is small in the first place. We also don’t know why he hates the Whos or what kind of creature he is; except that he’s a Grinch.

When Grinch hears the Whos getting ready for Christmas he gets annoyed by the joyous activities. He talks about the noise they will all make with their toys, how they’ll have a huge feast where they stuff themselves, and do what he hates most which were singing all day long. The Grinch decided then to stop Christmas from coming by dressing up as Satna Clause and makes his dog, Max, be his reindeer. He goes down to Whoville and steals all their presents, decorations, and food for the feast. While stealing one Christmas tree the Grinch runs into a little Who girl named Cindy-Lou Who. She asks why he’s taking the tree which he lies about needing to take it to his workshop to be fixed.
Then after she believes him he leaves Who-ville and goes to the top of his home to dump everything he stole. That is until he hears the Whos singing down below. This confuses the Grinch since he believed the joy of Christmas was something you bought in the store and not the joy in your heart for being with your family and friends on a special day. The Grinch’s heart grew three sizes after this and he decides to return everything to the Whos and joins them for their Christmas celebration.
Jim Carry’s movie that came out in 2002 goes into more details of the Grinch to give somewhat of a backstory as to why he hates Christmas. To start, they make Cindy-Lou have a larger role in the film. Being young herself she doesn’t understand the meaning of Christmas or at least it doesn’t feel the same to like it did when she was younger. After having a run in with the Grinch she decides to investigate why the Grinch hates Christmas and Who-ville. In an interview, the two old women who raised the Grinch explain that all the children are carried in baskets from a magical wind that brings them to the adults of Who-ville. In the interview scene you see that the Grinch is blown off course and ended up outside of a Christmas party the two women were at. This explains where he came from; sort of. Okay, I’m going to end it here and talk more about the live-action remake for tomorrow morning’s blog post. ‘til next time.
