What’s up F.E.M.M Fam! If any of you were twiddling your thumbs, waiting on the Oscars to air March 4th, you can check out what went down at the Spirit Awards March 3rd.
Director, of the 2017 film Get Out, Jordan Peele, won best feature and best director. In his directorial debut, Peele used the stage to speak on the cultural significance of being recognized for Get Out .
“We are in the beginning of a renaissance right now, where stories from the outsider, stories from the people in this room, the same stories that independent filmmakers have been telling for years are being honored and recognized and celebrated,” – Associated Press
OG director, Spike Lee, presented the award to Peele. He acknowledged Spike Lee in his acceptance speech for paving the way for him to create movies.
Get Out was made on a small budget, but grossed over $220 million worldwide and provoked conversation on identifying the appropriate genre for a like nothing else of this time. Peele said in his acceptance speech that he wanted to make a film in his favorite genre: “horror”. So there, we can stop that debate.
Time will tell if Peele wins an Oscar for Get Out. It wouldn’t be uncommon as the past four Spirit, best film winners, have won best picture at the Oscars.
Oscars will air March 4th at 8 pm EST 5 pm EST on ABC!
