For this blog, I want to share with you guys a new Netflix series called, Raising Dion, that’s based off a comic book and short film. The plot features an African American single mom, Nicole Reese, raising her seven-year-old son who has superpowers. In the trailer, you see that Dion has many powers such as teleporting, having blue pyrokinetic powers, telepathy, invisibility, and more. The story focuses on Nicole trying to raise her son without attracting attention from the government and how to help Dion to learn to control his powers. I will be sure to leave some links down below.
According to an article by, Deadline, the series will have ten-episodes; each an hour long. The series is being done by Liu and Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan, who has a supporting role, and showrunner Carol Barbee that has done Unreal and Judging Amy. The writer-producer will be, Michael Green, who wrote/produced American Gods and Logan. The project includes Charles D. King’s company MACRO that did the film Fences. Barbee adapted the short film and took materials from the comic that Liu wrote, and Jason Piperberg illustrated. Liu created this short film, comic, and tv series so there could be a more diverse representation of superheroes from a new point of view.
In the trailer, you see Nicole has cameras around the house, so she can keep an eye on her son, so he doesn’t do anything too dangerous with his powers or gets into any mischief. She also has security cameras outside her apartment to look out for government spies that would want to take her son away or anyone who would do him harm. She begins a video series to help herself and her son to understand his powers. She even creates a children’s superhero rule book just for him. Nicole also tries to keep him from using his powers in public, so they don’t draw attention, but you know seven-year old boys tend to have a mind of their own.
Nicole is also getting help from her late husband’s friend, Pat. He’s her filming sidekick and he also helps to raise Dion to use his powers wisely and to have a normal childhood. Together they take him to the comic book store, so he can learn from those characters what to do with his abilities. Pat even tries to convince Dion to do Batman’s voice. It looks like things are going well for the trio, that is until Nicole realizes one day that she and her son are being followed by men in suits and sunglasses. Looks like there will be some trouble ahead. It appears like it will be a great series. I hope they do more than one season or at least do more series like this one. And who knows with the popular Black Panther film we could expect to see more African American superhero series. Hope you guys enjoyed my blog. Links to the article and trailer will be down below and all you have to do is control-click. Till next time!
