The Nutcracker Ballet has been performed around Christmas time for over 126 years. Before it was a ballet the Nutcracker was a story written by E.T.A. Hoffman and was turned into a ballet by Ivan Vsevolozhsky and Marius Pepita. The music was written by Tchaikovsky and was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Nutcracker has had more than thirty stage, film, and TV adaptations done to it and now Disney will be turning the ballet into a live action film starring Morgan Freeman, Kiera Knightly, Helen Mirren, and Mackenzie Foy. Disney has just recently released it’s the first trailer for the film known as The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
Of course, Disney has given their own twist to the classic story. Clara had lost her mother some time ago and was left a locked box to her as a gift. Clara wants to find the key to see what he mother left her inside. During a game at her godfather’s annual holiday party, Clara follows a golden string that is attached to the key she’s been waiting for. That is until it disappears into another realm.
While in this parallel realm Clara discovers a solider named Philip and finds out the three realms of the Snowflakes, Flowers, and Sweets are in danger from the fourth realm ruled by the cynical Mother Ginger. Ginger also happens to have Clara’s key as well. The two go on an adventure to obtain the key and bring peace back to the realms of the parallel world. This movie is expected in theaters this November. I’ve seen the trailer for the film and to me, it looks like the Nutcracker meets Alice in Wonderland, but with more music and dancing.
