Disney Junior is coming out with their first ever animated TV show that has an Indian girl as the main character. In fact, this is their first series to be inspired by Indian culture. The show is called Mira, Royal Detective. The show has cast Indian actors to voice the characters in the show such as Freida Pinto, Kal Penn, Jessie and Bunke’d star Karan Bar, and Karan Soni. The series is set in the fictional enchanted land called Jalpur.
Each episode will be 22 minutes long and will feature authentic Indian music and dance numbers. The plot focuses on the commoner Mira who gets appointed to be the royal detective after solving a mystery that involved young Prince Neel. After that, the two of them along with Mira’s cousin Priya travel across the kingdom to solve cases for both royals and commoners. The show also includes two mongoose sidekicks, Mikku and Chikku. The show will debut in the year 2020.
Disney has begun expanding their content to include other cultures these past years; especially Indian culture. They already created a Pixar short film done by Indian animator Sanjay Patel called Sunjay’s Super Team. Disney has also expanded to the Hispanic culture with Elena of Avalor that focuses on Princess Elena’s story as a royal. The show was a spinoff of Sofia the First and includes a lot from the Hispanic culture. Disney even has had Doc McStuffins for a while now and she’s the first animated pre-school show to have an African American female as the lead outside their shows Sister, Sister, That’s So Raven, and the Proud Family.
