Film director, James Cameron confirmed in a keynote address that he is "personally committed" to creating at sequels to the 2009 film, Avatar, up to a forth or fifth installments. According to Reuters, Cameron is currently working on the first sequel and second sequel with Fox Studios. The process may get a little sticky, however, being that Disney plans to acquire Fox studios for a hefty price. Regardless, the second Avatar film is set to be ready and released by 2020.
The original Avatar film, starring Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, was certainly ahead of it's time at it pertains to visual stimulation, but was essentially a sci-fi spin on Disney's version of Pocahontas. Men "discover" a new world, want make it their own, and will crush anything or anyone to satisfy their craving for money and power. Man meets native, falls in love and wants to save the land and rid it of corruption.. (read the description here).
Though it's not certain how the plot will progress for the upcoming sequels, the same actors will return to play the same parts. Typically movies sequels transition best with actors that are the same, so hopefully the aesthetic with remain the same, if not improve.
