Heather Matson changed her outlook on her prosthetic after having a creative idea. Heather had to get a permanent ostomy/stoma bag added to her body after having her large intestine and rectum removed as a stage three colon cancer treatment. An ostomy/stoma bag is a prosthetic device that helps collect the body’s waste when any part of the colon, bladder, rectum, or intestine has been removed or damaged. Matson was at first disheartened by knowing the bag was permanent to her body until she got the idea to design covers for her bag that she now calls Petunia. Matson has several bags she has created.
Matson has several bags she has created. There’s a purple one with black lace for a girl’s night out, a pink flamingo one, and a vintage Wonder Woman bag. The Wonder Woman bag is her favorite because it gives her a lot of confidence and reminds her of how she’s a strong and independent woman. After her surgery, she began to go to an ostomy support group and once she showed them her bags, everyone became overjoyed by the idea; especially the ladies of the group. Matson has received many thanks for her bag covers and has begun selling her designs online. Matson feels ecstatic and humble about helping people like her feel more comfortable and confident with her bag designs.
