Hey Femm readers, as you all know the Kentucky Derby is coming up in a few weeks and I’m here to give you the rundown on Derby Fashion. Now there are different things to be worn at the derby depending on where you’re watching the race. For the people in the grandstand, clubhouse, suites and corporate hospitality areas, men and women will be wearing spring ensembles from the brands, Lily Pulitzer and Vineyard Vine. Women should keep the dress simple but don’t go with a casual looking dress. Also, you might want to wear layers since the weather at the Derby can be unpredictable.
Men should go with wearing bright pastels, plaid shirts, navy or even seersucker blazers with dress pants. For shoes women should wear comfortable flats like Jack Rogers, I personally wouldn’t recommend heels, and men should wear dress shoes. Ladies don’t forget to accessorize. Keep your jewelry simple and your bags shouldn’t be bigger than 12”, Derby rules. Men you can accessorize with nice watches, ties, bow ties, tie bars, and decorative pocket handkerchiefs. And most importantly, the hat.
The hat is the biggest fashion statement of the whole Derby. There are no limits to the kind of hat you can wear. Sun hats, fedoras, pillbox, cloche, Homburg, and anything but ball caps. Also, make sure the hat matches your outfit. If you have a lot going on with your hat, keep your clothes simple.
If the hat is simple, then dress up your outfit. The main fashion trends this year are, ruffles, spring colors, bell, puff, or cocoon sleeves, and the accessory colors are gold and fluorescent pink. Now if you’re an infielder there really isn’t much of a dress code but dressing up is still recommend. But like I said there’s no dress code. You can wear jeans, ball caps, sneakers, boots, about anything really. The infielders have even worn costumes before. So, fashion really depends on where you’ll be watching the race. That’s all for this blog post ‘til next time.
