With multiple Grammys and the highest regarded stream only mixtape "Coloring Book", Chance the Rapper (Chancelor Bennett) remains humble in giving back to his community. He is set to give the commencement address at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA next month. According to the Chicago Tribune, Dillard University's president, Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough holds Chance at high regards, recognizing the positive message he spreads. Kimbrough who teaches an ethics and hip hop class, felt Bennett would be a perfect fit for the commencement speak for his "entrepreneurial and authentic" spirit.
"The activism is a bonus with Chance...his civic engagement, including encouraging people to vote and willingness to speak out on issues, like his recent opposition to a Heineken ad, are just as paramount - .Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough via Chicago Tribune
Though he has not particularly been outspoken about his giving, he is hard at work in the community Chance, a Chicago native, works to build his community through artistic expression, civic engagement, and education. He founded Social Works that focuses on giving to Chicago public schools. He will work with Social Works on a "FUNraiser" April 27th at Skyzone in Elmurst, IL. He provides a stage to kids by hosting Open Mic Nights at public libraries with @OpenMikehicago . A student is called up and gets three minutes to do whatever they see fit.
"I think it wasn't just that Chicago public schools don't have enough money. It's how the money gets spent and the funding formulas for our school district and all school districts in America," - Chance the Rapper in "CBS This Morning" Interview
Aside from community work, Chance continues, of course to work on his craft that provided him a platform. More recently Chance explained to radio host, Ebro Darden, that he is working on a "cinematic" music video for the song, "Everything Remix" for rapper, G Herbo's "Humble Beast Deluxe". Chance the Rapper's mixtape, "Coloring Book" is still available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.
