Where in the world has Carmen Sandiego been? The answer: in the 80s and 90s, but no more! Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) is co producing and portraying Carmen Sandiego in a live action film with video streaming giant Netflix. There is no particular release date at this time besides sometime this year. There is also no information on who will be directing or writing the film, but Rodriguez's co producers, along with her company "I Can and I Will productions", with be Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser.
Gina Rodriguez will voice Carmen Sandiego in a children series that has been set for sometime in 2019 will also stream on Netflix. It is unclear of the exact release date of the children's series but there is a description of the series listed on Netflix. Should you open Netflix app on your gaming console it will only reflect a blank screen, I'm assuming because it is too early to have a full or even partial trailer.
Carmen Sandiego is depicted as a villain in the original stories, so I am curious to see what direct the film will take, whether that be catered to children or taking the rating up to R with heavy in action and scandals. A live action film has so much potential, especially with the technology available. I am excited to see what her gadgets will look like with a modern twist.
...this series follows her new international capers as well as past escapades that led straight to her becoming a super thief." - Netflix 2018
Before the film comes out it would be a good idea to take a walk down nostalgia lane, to think about the Saturday mornings where a thief could teach children geography. The show was an adaptation of of the computer games in the 90s, which eventually turned into books. Though "Carmen Sandiego" can be found on the world wide web and in stores, according to Huffington Post, books are to be promoted around the time of the film's release. Enjoy the full theme song below
