For over thirty year, Janet Jackson has been in the industry dropping hits and causing a stir. In 1977, at a very young age she began to perform with her brother on the variety show The Jacksons. She initially wanted to act in order to support her dream of becoming an entertainment lawyer. She landed roles in the television shows Good Times (1977-79), Diff'rent Strokes (1980-84), and Fame (1984-85). In the midst of her acting career, she began her musical career and released her first studio album Janet Jackson in 1982.
With her vocals becoming one of the most iconic in the industry, it's only right that she receives the Billboard Icon Award. As an artist who as performed at American Bandstand, Soul Train, and the Superbowl she does not disappoint the audience when performance time comes. She has sold over 100 million records, 26 million certified album copies, and she is the first and only to produce 7 top five hits from one album.
If anyone deserves the award it's definitely Janet. She is a pioneer in the game in everyway and is the first female artist to achieve a number one single in each of the past decade. According to Billboard, "Janet Jackson has been one of music's leading voices since the '80s, and now the pop legend will be honored with an appropriately prestigious award at this year's Billboard Music Awards."
