Amazon Prime has a new mini-series coming out on March 1st called The Widow. The series follows a woman who goes in search of her missing husband and her journey leads her to the Congo. While looking for him she soon discovers truths about her love’s disappearance. This series stars Kate Beckinsale, Alex Kingston, Babs Olusanmokun, and Charles Dance. So far there are eight episodes in the miniseries.
This series will definitely be interesting to watch, and I can’t help but wonder if this series will have any illusions to the book Heart of Darkness. In that book, the main character Marlow travels down the Congo with a group of men who look for a man named Kurtz. During his journey, Marlow sees things that cause him to see the vast jungle as darkness and the tiny native villages as little islands throughout. Also, he had believed that Kurtz was a reputable man until he discovered that he had gone mad with power and greed. Kurtz proclaimed himself to be a god amongst the natives and raided their homes in search of ivory.
He even had native heads posted on top of his fence surrounding his station. Kurtz is picked up by Marlow and the crew because he is very ill and the last thing he says before passing is, “The horror! The horror!” This book focuses on the hypocrisy of Imperialism and how men like Kurtz were revered as noble men but were actually more barbaric and insane than the natives whom they claimed were the savage ones. Maybe in this mini-series, the wife discovers the same hard truths about her husband. She could have believed he was a perfect and loving husband but while traveling in the Congo she could learn he was very far from perfect. However, this is all mere speculation and the whole basis of the plot can only be known when the series premieres on March 1st.
