After almost 22 years of serving a life sentence for a first time, non-violent first drug offense, Alice Marie Johnson walks free. Kardashian-West met with President Trump about a week ago to discuss the case of Alice Marie Johnson and the possibility granting her clemency. The meeting apparently went well and Johnson now walks free in Memphis, TN with her family.
Johnson thanked Kim for the work she had done. Alice says that there are other people “who pose no safety risk to their community” and that she will not forget about those left behind. She wants to spread her message and advocate for those in the situation she just escaped. Kim tweets: "Her[Johnson] commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance." While the public is ecstatic for Johnson and grateful that Kim Kardashian was able to pull strings to get her out, people are not so welcoming to the fact that “normal” people, could not accomplish a federal pardon so quickly on their best day.
Kim explained what events led up to her meeting the president to CNN, stating that she originally reached out to Ivanka Trump to express interest in meeting with President Trump. Some also question the president’s motives. According to Today, President is now under pressure to begin pardoning others who are in prison for similar offenses. The same source also made the observation that President Trump has previously chosen to pardon those who would benefit him politically, especially since the pardon contradicts his agenda to tighten penalties for criminal offenses. When asked if she believed the president would use their interaction and the pardoning of Ms. Johnson for political gain she disagreed: “At the end of the day, he [President Trump] heard me out. We got the job done.”
Congratulations on your freedom Ms. Johnson!
