Good evening you guys. For this evening’s post, I’d like to share with you a story about the South Korean cellist Aaron Kim, aka Tacit, who makes electronic music in Dubai. After Kim discovered he had a critical condition that leads to hearing loss, he wondered whether he needed to stop playing music altogether or shift his focus to helping produce music in Dubai’s underground music world.
Kim has been living in Dubai for nine years and not only has a career as a cellist but also works in sound design and makes electronic music. Even though Kim enjoys playing the cello, a more classical instrument, he prefers electronic music since there are zero rules to follow when it comes to making it. It has 100% free creativity unlike classical music that is super strict. Kim loves traveling to various places in Dubai to record authentic sounds, like ocean waves, so he can take it back home and combine it with his very granulated cello sound. Kim himself believes that the backbone of every great city or town is music and art.
Kim is excited that he gets to grow and create music in Dubai’s underground music world because it’s still new and growing as well. One of his favorite record stores that his friend, Shadi runs is called The Flip Side. Shadi was the first person to open a record store in Dubai. I checked out the website for the store, and it looks like a cool place to go. I’ll leave a link to it down below. Kim believes that music is the backbone of every city in the world and that’s why he loves Dubai so much. That’s all for this blog post ‘til next Femm readers.
