Japanese anime Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms will premier in US theaters for the first time July 20th. The film was featured at the Glasgow, Scotland film festival back in March. w Marquia: When a Promised Flower Blooms, by the company Showgate was directed by Mari Okada. Unlike old Studio Ghibli films, this film does not include any English dubbing, only English subtitles.
This foreign film tells the story of an immortal girl that lives in the fictional world of Lolph where people stop aging in their mid-teens and can live for hundreds of years. The girl is Maquia and despite living in a peaceful paradise she feels completely alone. That is until one day her homeland is attacked by the Mesarte army that wants her peoples' blood to gain immortality themselves. Maquia manages to escape the carnage but with no home and none of her fellow people with her she ends up wandering around in a dark forest. It is here that she meets the infant mortal boy Erial who lost his parents and becomes the boy’s guardian where together they form a strong and loving bond.
