Good brunch time F.E.M.M fam! Today’s brunch will revolve around the Netflix original series, Seven Seconds which explores a common headline in today’s America: crooked law enforcement and the complicated relationship between law enforcement and community.
The opening credits frequently show a boy riding a bike, with a bird-shaped noisemaker attached to the back wheel. This image will be common throughout the series, as we later find that it symbolizes the few moments after 15 year old, Brenton Butler was hit. There are flashing police car lights and a child holding a sign that reads: “am I next?”
The first few seconds in the first episode lays everything out plainly. Actor, Beau Knapp, as Peter Jablonski, drives down an icy road. He is on his phone, talking about a woman in the hospital and “the baby”. He hits something in the road while looking down at his phone. He steps out of his car to find the half of a bicycle with the back wheel visible. The bird-shape noisemaker clicks as the wheel is still spinning on its own from the impact. A bloody trail leads to where the pedestrian lies, in the ditch which, by the way, seems impossibly far from where the car was stopped.
Time passes and Mike Diangelo, played by David Lyons approached Jablonski’s vehicle. He tells him to drive away and essentially pretend nothing happened.
Jablonski struggles to keep his secret, setting the tone for the rest of the series. Prosecutor KJ Harper, portrayed by Clare-Hope Ashitey, steps in as the attorney for the victim and begins to investigate what really happened. KJ Harper’s partner seems to believe that the victim was in a gang, while Harper seems to have a feeling that something else was going on. By close of the first episode, we know that Jablonski wants to turn himself in, but he is encouraged not to so, since he is a white cop who left a black kid in the cold. With racial tensions already running high in New Jersey, he holds his tongue for the time being.
Seven Seconds There are currently 10 episodes, which I am about 3 episodes in to. It’s too early to tell if there will be a second season, but it is a captivating series you don’t want to miss! The entire series is available to binge watch as of February 23rd.
