"This Mother's Day, thank all the mothers for their sacrifices"
Hair color, body type, and eye color can be easily passed from mother to child. What about evil?
Mother's Day recently flooded social media timelines with photos of families and mothers with their children, flashing their smiling faces and sentimental messages. For those with a darker taste, the trailer for psychological horror, "Hereditary", was recently released to show "appreciation" for traits that can be passed down from one generation to to the next. The trailer tells viewers to thank their mother for all their sacrifices, while showing the main character's (Toni Collette as Annie Graham), daughter, Charlie Graham (Milly Shapiro) cutting a bird's head off with scissors.
The film is certainly not intended to be a Sisters of the Traveling Pants or The Secret life of Bees. In Hereditary, the "secretive and private" matriarch of the Graham family passes away. The secrets held by their ancestors make their way to light by way of hallucinations and involuntary actions through her daughter's family. It is gritty, eerie, and seems to contain plenty of jump scares, a slight twist from traditional horror. Like any psychological horror, Hereditary, explores mental illness, through grief and resentment, as Annie Graham's family struggles to break from their ancestry.
The film was produced by the same producers of Split and the Witch, both films of which were wildly entertaining and mind boggling and a bit of acquired taste. Hereditary is rated - R, which should suggest a pleasing or terrifying viewing experience. The film will be in theaters June 8th.
